John Girvan was born and brought up in Devizes, Wiltshire, England. He is a traditional blacksmith who runs the Canal Forge at Lower Wharf in Devizes where he produces specialized hot forged work and general fabrications.
John has always been interested in topics with a tradition. He found that his personal research into these historically interesting subjects fascinated people, so over the years he developed a host of talks. This later extended to guided walks around Devizes. He is a speaker for the National Federation of Women's Institute, and various historical societies, including The Family History Society.
John is more than a local celebrity, he has appeared in National and International press and has has featured in a number of TV programmes:
- 'Days out' - BBC, Angela Rippon trying blacksmithing at the Canal Forge.
- 'Coast to Coast' - BBC, Janet Street Porter visiting the forge, and seeing the bra collection.
- 'Collectors Lot' - C4, Sue Cook finds out about the bra collection.
- 'The Why Files' - LiveTV, Dave Barrett goes on the Ghost Walk.
- 'History Mysteries' - BBC2, featuring John at the Canal Forge and discussing his original door from the Victorian prison.
- 'Ghost Towns' - LivingTV, Derek Acorah investigates a presence at the Canal Forge.
